Why book taste makes a better first conversation

A shared book is a shared experience you can both still feel. It gives two strangers a subject with stakes, opinions and an ending to argue about. That is a far better opening than “how was your weekend”, and it tells you quickly whether you enjoy the way this person thinks.

Taste alone is not the point. Two people who love the same novel for opposite reasons often have more to say than two people with identical shelves.

• You add books by searching Open Library, typing them in, or uploading a reading list as CSV.
• You answer nine short scales about how you read — pace, spoilers, endings, re-reading, discussion style.
• Hard filters run first: intention, age range, distance, gender preferences, boundaries and blocks.
• Remaining readers are ranked on shared literary world, reading-personality fit, productive difference and wildcard potential.
• You see reasons in plain language, never a score.

Dating, friendship, or either

Set your intention when you join and change it whenever you like. Someone looking for a reading friend is never shown to someone looking only to date, and the reverse holds too. If you would like both, friendship matching runs alongside dating.

Reading compatibility is not identical shelves

Compatibility here has three parts: enough overlap to understand each other, enough difference to keep the conversation alive, and a compatible way of talking about books. A fast, plot-first reader and a slow, margin-annotating reader can work beautifully — as long as neither of them wants the other to change.

How to start

Add three books that mattered to you, answer the reading questions honestly, and open your discovery queue. You will see one reader at a time, with a short explanation of why the two of you could work and one question worth asking them. A match happens only when both people say yes.
